Of all the illustrations made for James Joyce’s Ulysses in the late 1940s, Richard Hamilton considered this best expressed the writer’s imagination. Set in Dublin’s red-light district known as ‘Nighttown’, it shows but a few of the guises, both real and hallucinatory, that Leopold Bloom adopted to enter the infamous establishment of Bella Cohen.
